I Want, I Want, I Want

Technological advancements have altered every aspect of society’s expectations of mass media. We no longer are okay with ambling to the post office for a handwritten letter from our great Aunt Tina to get family updates. Nor are we comfortable with sitting on hold to connect with the next available customer service representative or striking up a conversation with a stranger at a party in hopes of making a friend. We want news, we want solutions, we want connections, and we want them NOW! But are we asking too much of our digital world?

These demands aren’t limited to personal use either. Professionals across the globe seek the advantages of modern technology to share information and foster ties. Society as a whole has almost hit “fast forward” on mass media in hopes of receiving instant gratification. Knowledge sharing is one of the main areas this can be seen on a variety of social media platforms. Researchers have conducted studies that support the claim that networking sites can be exceptional resources to both share ideas and ask questions. One study found positive outcomes included attracting new people, boosting networking efforts, increased social impact, and gained visibility.

Some of us may be able to recall way back to our school days, thumbing through countless textbooks or guides trying to gain answers to some of our most pressing academic questions. Thankfully, mass media has altered that experience entirely for younger generations. Tasks that once took a considerable amount of time can now be done faster, more efficiently, and often in tandem with other tasks. While many of us appreciate advanced technology for its ability to bridge communication gaps and grow online communities, there are other incredible benefits available outside of interpersonal settings. The elevated expectations society has developed are generally met across a wide range of topics. Perhaps we aren’t asking too much, but rather just enjoying the perks of technology to their fullest.
